Setting up PPoint with Irex

PPoint

Before you can set up a Point, you must contact a Fidonet Sysop (BossNode) that supports Points. S/he will be able to give you information such as your Point address and a password that is required to set up the Point software and mailer.

You need two programs to run PPoint and Irex for an "Internet Only Point" in Fidonet. You can find the PPoint software on the "Point" Page. Get the Internet Rex Program here(get the Windows version).

We'll start with the setup of PPoint. Create a directory on your "C:" drive named ppoint. Place the PPoint zip file there and unzip it. From a Dos Prompt, change to the PPoint directory that you just created (cd/ppoint) and type ppoint.exe. Reference the links above for screen shots of the setups as they are mentiond. For any portions of the setup not referenced choose the defaut.

  1. (Setup 1) The first choice you will be presented with is shown in `Setup 1'. Choose `Point'.
  2. (Setup 2) Put in your name. It is best to put in your real name since most Fidonet echos require real names when posting.
  3. (Setup 3) Enter the Point address that you were given by your Sysop (BossNode)
  4. (Setup 4) The route address is generally the default and looks the same as your Point address without the point number.
  5. (Setup 5) Give your Point a name or take the default.
  6. (Setup 6) This is by far the most important. You and your BossNode should have an agreed to a password. Put it here !EXACTLY! as you agreed. IE, BUBBA may not be the same as bubba.
Ok, from here, you should have a few more screens. Take the deafult until you reach the start screen that has the options of Host, Mail, Options, Setup. You're now through with this portion. Exit the PPoint program and then read on. Only a couple more things to do. :-)

Reference the "Mailer Screen"

This is important. Be sure to do this or things won't work at all correctly. :(

  1. Open your favorite text editor.
    1. NOTE!! Your text editor !!MUST!! be able to save in plain ASCII text. A good editor would be Windows`Notepad'.
  2. Look in the PPoint directory on your `C' drive and open the file named `MAILER.BAT'
  3. Check the screen shot and edit the MAILER.BAT file to look EXACTLY like the screen shot.
  4. Save the file and exit the editor.
Now, read on. :-)

Internet Rex
NOTE!: Irex is a shareware program. The author is a great guy and you can use the unregistered version forever if you wish. If you like being a Point and like the Irex program, please register it and help the shareware concept. Now, on with the show. :)

You should have a copy of the latest version of Irex. If not, go get it. :-)

Once you get the current version (2.29), reference the above screen shots and follow the below directions. It's not that hard, although it may look that way at first.. :-)

First, Create a directory under your PPoint directory called irex. Unzip the Irex zip file to that directory. Change to the Irex directory and type "rexcfgw" and press enter.

Starting from the first screen you see:
  1. (Irex 1) This will be the first screen you see. The highlighted selection should be "General Information.", Choose it.
  2. (Irex 2) You should now be at the screen to put your information in. Key parts of this are the flags. Refernce the screen shot for the rest. When done, hit your <escape> key to exit this part of the setup.
    1. NOTE!!!! DO NOT PUT A PASSWORD IN THIS SCREEN!!!!
  3. (Irex 3) Arrow key down to `Rex's Behaviour". Hit enter and you will see the options in the screen shot. Key areas are:
    1. Kill empty netmail Yes
    2. Crash/IMM mail Send
    3. Send FREQs Yes
Change these as indicated in the screen shot and then hit escape to exit that section.
  4. (Irex 4) `Files, Paths and Programs". In this area, we have a few things to do. :)
    1. (Irex 5) `Internet Rex files and paths'. This is where you enter the drive and path to Internet Rex's stuff. Hit Enter for each option and fill in the path as shown. You will be asked if you want to create the directory. Answer yes on each one. When done, hit ezcape to exit that screen.
    2. (Irex 6) `Front end mailer setup'. Same proceedure as above. When done, hit escape to get back to the main screen (1). Note: You might not need a Nodelist to put in the Nodelist directory, but it won't hurt. Get the current Nodelist here.
  5. (Irex 7) `Address Manager'. When you choose this, the first option you will see is another `Address Manager'. Hit enter on that selection and you will see a screen with `Main Address'. Make sure it is highlighted and hit your `insert' key. Put your Point address there then hit enter. When done, hit escape. and choose "Zone Matching'. Hit enter and put your Zone number there (probably 1) and then hit enter. Choose your Point address from the list (should be the only one there) and hit enter. Hit escape and read on.
  6. (Irex 8) The next option is the 'Domain Setup'. Don't be fooled by this. Simply hit enter and put your Zone number in. Hit enter again and put `fidonet'. then hit enter. Hit escape to exit this portion and get back the the main screen.
    1. NOTE!!!!! When you type the domain name in, be sure it is in all LOWER CASE. Also be sure that the spelling is right and that there is no extension on the domain.
  7. (Irex 9) Next is the `Node manager'. Hit enter there and when the screen comes up, hit insert. For `System address', put your BossNode's address. For `Sysop's Name', put your BossNode's name. For the `Outbound` and `Inbound' hit enter untill it shows as in the screen shot (BinkP).
  8. (Irex 10) Now, choose the `Configure' option. You should see a screen that looks like the screen shot (Irex 10). If not, you got the wrong option in the `Node manager'. There are two things to configure here.
    1. `Site's address`. Put in the IP (Internet) address to your BossNode. This can be the IP address or a URL. Your BossNode should have given you this information.
    2. `Default domain'. Should be fidonet as in the previous domain setup.
Ok. Hit escape untill you exit the Irex configuration program. Be sure to answer yes whn asked to save.

WOW! You're done. :-)

When you start PPoint, it will do a scan of the message base and then call Irex to poll your BossNode for mail. When Irex exits, PPoint will toss the mail and you're on your way. :-)

Well... Almost. You will need to Netmail your BossNode and ask for a list of the message echos available to you. You will also need to ask your BossNode how to `Areafix' the echos. I'll not try to explain the `Areafix` concept here. After all, the BossNode needs to have something to do, right? :-)

Some final notes: The Irex setup has a help feature built into it. You can access this for help with any part of the configuration by pressing your <F1> key.

Have fun!! :-))
